Driving to Florence? The most important thing to know is the ZTL, the limited traffic zone that covers the historic center. Drive through it at the wrong time and a camera records your plate, and a fine arrives weeks or months later, often through your car rental company. This guide explains how the ZTL works, where to park, and how we help our guests arrive by car without a fine.
What is the ZTL in Florence?
ZTL stands for Zona a Traffico Limitato, a limited traffic zone. In Florence it covers almost the entire historic center, including the Duomo, Santa Croce and the streets around our apartments. Only residents and authorized vehicles may drive in during active hours.
Every entry point has a gate with a camera that reads license plates. There is no barrier: you can drive in without noticing, and the fine is issued automatically.
ZTL hours
- Monday to Friday: 7:30 to 20:00
- Saturday: 7:30 to 16:00
- Sundays and public holidays: not active
- Summer nights: from the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October, the ZTL is also active on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, until 3:00
At each gate an electronic sign shows VARCO ATTIVO (gate active, do not enter) or VARCO NON ATTIVO (gate not active). If you are not sure, do not drive in.
Even when the ZTL is not active, you cannot park on the street in the center. Street parking inside the ZTL is for residents only. Pedestrian areas and bus and tram lanes are closed to cars at all times.
ZTL fines
A ZTL fine is roughly €80 to over €300, plus notification costs. Each camera you pass can mean a separate fine, so a short wrong turn can add up quickly. If you drive a rental car, the rental company usually adds its own administration fee for passing on your details. Fines often arrive months after your trip.
How to drive to your apartment without a fine
Guests of hotels and garages inside the ZTL may drive in, as long as the car’s plate is communicated to the city no later than 3 hours after passing the gate. If the plate is not registered in time, the fine is issued.
This is how we help our guests:
- Tell us before arrival that you are coming by car.
- We direct you to a local parking garage within walking distance of your apartment.
- Drive straight to the garage using the shortest route. The garage adds your plate to the city system, so you do not get a fine.
- Leave the car in the garage for your stay and walk everywhere. Florence’s center is best seen on foot.
Each time you drive out and back in, the plate has to be registered again, so it is easiest to park once and leave the car until you check out.
Parking outside the ZTL
If you prefer to leave the car outside the center, there are car parks just outside the ZTL and park-and-ride car parks connected to the center by tram, such as Villa Costanza on tram line T1. Parking outside the ZTL is usually cheaper, but you will need to carry your luggage to the apartment by tram, taxi or on foot.
Tips for driving in Florence
- Do not rely only on your GPS. It does not know when the ZTL is active and may route you through a gate.
- Plan your arrival with us before you set off, so you know exactly which garage to use.
- Keep your parking ticket and garage receipt until you are home.
- Look out for “Pulizia strade” signs outside the center: they mean street cleaning, and cars can be towed.
